Sometimes the snow makes the journey to school is dangerous or completely impossible, leave some people can’t go to work.

When the country becomes covered with snow, schools sometimes have to close when temperatures plummet if there are not enough staff, if the site is unsafe, or if children cannot walk safely.

Many employers are flexible with employees who have to care for their children due to contingencies, such as adverse weather conditions.

If your child is under 18, you also have other rights to time off.

This is called “parental leave” – ​​but you must have worked for your employer for at least a year before you can apply for this leave.

You can take up to 18 weeks of parental care leave before your child turns 18, but your employer may limit this time to four weeks per year.

Are you getting paid for this time off?

In both dependent and parental leave, you will not be paid for your time off, unless your employment contract provides so.

You can negotiate holidays with your employer if you still want paid and paid leave but that will be up to them to decide.

But the important thing is that you don’t have to miss the time later.

Can you take a day off work due to the snow if you don’t have kids?

Unfortunately, there is no legal right to automatically be paid if you miss work due to snow.

Employers have the right to consider your absence as unauthorized, even if it is due to weather circumstances beyond your control.

Some employers may ask you to work from home if you really can’t get in.

If you can’t start work, your boss may ask you to take unpaid leave or use up your vacation allowance.

If your workplace is closed due to disruption and you don’t normally work from home, your employer usually cannot deduct your pay.

Check your employment contract and know your rights before talking to your employer.

A sensible boss is very flexible, especially if you’ve given them a lot of notice and put a lot of effort into getting there.
