‘BEST Before’ dates often frighten many of us by throwing out completely edible stuff.
But it turns out that a large number of foods are still safe to eat after their infancy. This is the lowest level.
Can you eat eggs after the best day before?
In short, yes. Eating eggs after the ‘best before’ date is recommended as safe.
And if you keep eggs in the fridge, they’re probably safe to eat for up to three weeks after a certain date.
However, the taste and texture can be a little different from what you’re used to, and for some dishes, the freshest is best.
Sarah Howard, head of engineering at Heritage Breeds, said: “The best results are always achieved when eggs are as fresh as possible during the best time before date.
“Poached eggs in particular can be tricky to make properly, and using the freshest of eggs will get you the perfect finish – the whites have a neat structure, surrounding the deep orange yolk.”
Official advice from the Food Standards Agency states that “eggs can be eaten after best-before date, as long as they are thoroughly cooked until both the yolk and white are solid, or if they are used in dishes where they will be fully cooked, such as a cake”.
How long will the eggs be good from the expiration date?
Eggs have a shelf life of 28 days from the date of laying.
By law, they must reach the final consumer within 21 days of being born to give Britons seven days to eat them.
However, if stored properly, eggs can stay fresh for up to five weeks beyond the date on the box.
This is because eggs have a “best before” date rather than a “best before” date – which has more to do with safety than quality.
How to know if your egg has been released
Even if you’ve stored eggs in the fridge, it’s always a concern to check that they’re empty before eating.
There are several ways to do this, but some are simpler than others.

- Separate egg whites and eggs if saving leftovers
- Leave unshelled hard-boiled eggs as long as possible before eating
- Freeze beaten eggs
What other foods should you get rid of, and are there any you can keep after your best day?
While some foods really should be chewed not long after their ‘best before’ expiration date, there are others you can eat with a pinch of salt.
The Food can still be safely consumed after the previous best consists of:
- Bread – Use by date on bread assuming you have left it in the kitchen. You can extend this time by up to two weeks by keeping your loaf in the refrigerator.
- Chocolate – As long as your chocolate is good, you should be pretty good to go. Sometimes a white film can form on stale chocolate caused by crystallized sugar, but it won’t harm you.
- Hard cheese – Mold can’t get into harder cheeses like cheddar, so you can cut out any mold and it’s safe to eat.
- Yogurt – As long as the yogurt has not been opened, you can usually enjoy it for two weeks after the best before date.
- cookies – Although your favorite snacks may lose some of their freshness after their shelf life, you can eat them for a few weeks afterward.
- Dried pasta – Although dried pasta usually has a long shelf life, you can push this shelf life up to three years if stored in a cool, dry, and airtight environment.
- Canned food – As long as your canned goods are undamaged and stored in a cool place away from direct light, your canned goods can last for about four years.
- Pickles Preserved foods like pickles can last up to two years past their best before date if they are stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator – but they can start to lose some of their crispness .
- Frozen vegetables – In theory, if your vegetables are kept frozen, it can last indefinitely. While expired merchandise won’t harm you, the texture and flavor can change over time.
- Cabbage leaves – As long as your leaves are not moldy, you can safely eat them after the time of use.
- Brandy When stored properly, spirits such as whiskey can be stored open and so can gin and vodka.
- Milk – You can worry about milk, but as long as it tastes and smells OK, you can skip the date on the box.
But there are also certain foods you should definitely give up, including:
- Fresh berries Fresh strawberries, blueberries, or raspberries can carry a parasite called cyclospora, which can cause diarrhea, vomiting, and other nasty flu-like symptoms. Make sure you freeze any fruit you know you won’t be able to eat in time and wash them well before eating.
- Soft cheese Soft cheeses, such as brie, can contain Listeria bacteria, as well as E. coli bacteria – especially if they’re made with unpasteurized milk – which should always be eaten “used by”.
- Fresh meat Freshly purchased meat should be consumed or frozen (before bacteria have a chance to multiply).
- Fresh juice Raw juices are not pasteurized and are more susceptible to bacterial contamination, so you should always strain any juices that have passed their use-by date.
- Sprout – Sprouted greens grown in a warm, moist environment mean they can be susceptible to contamination and can grow bacteria like E. coli and salmonella.
- Fish – You must never eat less fish. Fish that is not fresh increases your chances of getting listeriosis, a disease that causes abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting.
