The New York Mets announced the signing of Starling quarterback Marte on Tuesday night.
The Mets did not disclose financial terms, but earlier reports noted that the deal was worth $78 million.
“Starling is a top talent at the top,” new Mets general manager Billy Eppler said in a press release. “His play in the outfield makes the team stronger in midfield defense and his elite basic running skills are a perfect match. He has a winning attitude and will be a great asset as well as in our club. ”
Marte, 33, split last season between the Miami Marlins and the Oakland Athletics. He has an overall batting average of 0.310 with a base-to-base percentage of 0.383 and a slip rate of 0.458 with 12 home runs and 55 RBIs. He led the major leagues with 47 stolen bases, marking a career high.
In 10 seasons with the Pittsburgh Pirates (2012-2019), Arizona Diamondbacks (2020), Marlins (2020-21) and Athletics (2021), Marte has a career average hit batting of 0.289, a miss rate of 0.289. 0.451, 126 home runs, 502 RBI, 680 runs scored and 296 bases stolen.
The Dominican-born player has played almost exclusively in a central position since the 2018 season.
Marte was an All-Star in 2015 and won a Golden Glove award in 2015 and 2016.
The Mets are also said to have reached an agreement with three-time Cy Young winners Max Scherzer, midfielder Mark Canha and midfielder Eduardo Escobar.
