Burnley could snag an ‘incredible’ £25m Viktor Gyokeres after promotion

The Turf Moor crowd breathed a sigh of relief when the final whistle sounded at the end of Burnley’s nerve-wracking 1-0 win over Coventry City in mid-January.

Few center forwards had given the most watertight defense in the championship an afternoon like this; Viktor Gyokeres will terrify anyone with burgundy conviction with his boot-shattering combination of speed, power and finesse.

“He showed everything he is today,” Kompany told Lancs Live; Burnley have succeeded where so many have failed this season, keeping Gyokeres off the top scorers list.

“We have a defense that is usually very aggressive and can win the ball back on the first impact. With him you need two, three or even four times.

“He’s able to straighten you out and create a threat to the gate. His last balls are good. Not just where to shoot, but how to bring other players into the game.”

Vincent Kompany’s Burnley as does Coventry City striker Viktor Gyokeres

Gyokeres may have drawn a gap in both meetings with Burnley this season. But having scored 19 goals and assisted eight more – and dragged Coventry from bottom of the table and close to the play-offs – if Burnley is a ‘premier league team waiting’ then Viktor Gyokeres is a ‘premier league’. Strikers on hold’ too.

Four months ago, Kompany put Gyokeres at the top of his January wish list, according to The Sun. However, it quickly became clear – with the Swede’s price tag rising to around £25million – Burnley would have to wait until the summer before stepping up their interest (TEAMtalk).

Now, while the promotion isn’t certain, it’s as good as. Burnley are 16 points clear of third-placed Middlesbrough. Technically they can be confirmed again as a first-class team with wins in the next two games; Sunderland and Boro on the horizon. Although taking six points from either is easier said than done.

Either way, Premier League football – and a Premier League budget – could potentially make a deal that would have been impossible in the Championship, well, a little more possible.

“(Gyokeres) is absolutely incredible,” fellow Rotherham United goalkeeper Viktor Johansson told Aftonbladet. “He’s really big in the championship. He’s always talked about everywhere.

“One hundred percent (he’s ready for the Premier League).”
