Brooklyn Half Marathon 2022: Runner dies after collapsing at finish

NEW YORK — A man died after collapsing at the finish line of the Brooklyn Half Marathon on Saturday.

Police say the 30-year-old Brooklyn man collapsed just before 9 a.m. after crossing the finish line in Coney Island.

The New York Road Runners said the man was immediately attended to by medical personnel at the scene and then taken to the Coney Island Hospital.

It’s not clear if heat was a factor, police believe he may have suffered a heart attack. The coroner has yet to determine a cause of death.

The New York Road Runners released the following statement:

We are deeply saddened by the death of a competitor following the RBC Brooklyn Half 2022. Our thoughts and condolences go out to the runner’s family and those close to him.

The 30-year-old male runner collapsed after finishing the race. He was immediately treated by on-site medical personnel and then taken to Coney Island Hospital. NYRR has medical staff stationed throughout the course from start to finish, ready to respond immediately to the medical needs of all runners, spectators, volunteers and staff. Runners who require further care will be transferred to appropriate medical facilities.

The health and safety of our runners, volunteers, partners and employees remains a top priority for NYRR. In coordination and consultation with city agency partners and weather experts, NYRR closely monitored weather conditions before and during the race. Throughout the race, weather temperatures ranged from the low 60s to the high 70s.

The New York City Fire Department said EMS treated 17 people, one refused medical care, while the 16 others were taken to hospital with five of them in serious condition.

Over 22,000 runners were scheduled to run from Prospect Park to the Coney Island boardwalk in Saturday’s half marathon, which was running at full capacity for the first time in three years.

Temperatures topped 80 degrees Fahrenheit (26.7 degrees Celsius) in Brooklyn as of midday. A heat alert, warning that hot temperatures and high humidity can trigger heat illnesses, remains in effect throughout New York City through 8 p.m. Saturday.

The identity of the deceased runner has not yet been released. It is the first fatality of a runner at the Brooklyn Half Marathon since 2014.
