Brooke Shields says child prostitute movie Pretty Baby ‘won’t be made right now’ and ‘it’s a huge loss’

Brooke shields reflected on playing a child prostitute in the 1978 film Adorable baby.

American actress, now 56 years old, 11 years old when she played the lead role Louis MalleThe film is about a child who grows up in a brothel and is later auctioned off to the highest bidder.

She was filmed nude and her mother, Teri, received much criticism for allowing her daughter to be in the film.

Speaking in a new interview with Times MagazineShields said she believes the protective factors behind #MeToo have gone too far.

“I think it’s too much,” she said. “You watch movies like Adorable baby, you look at Zeffirelli’s Romeo and Juliet or you watch any of the upcoming movies that Louis Malle did, like Au Revoir les Enfants or Lacombe, Lucien or whatever. There is always a sexual element to them.

“Perhaps the movies I made now would not have been made because of such censorship, and that would be a huge loss. Adorable baby is one of the most beautiful films I have ever been in and I will protect it forever.

“I wrote my thesis on it and I’m proud of it.”

Chicago Sun-Times critic Roger Ebert, who gave the film three stars out of four, discussed at the time of the film’s release how “Adorable baby has been attacked in some areas as child pornography. It cannot. It’s a reminder of a time and place and a sad chapter of Americana. He also commended Shields’ performance, writing that she “…really creates a character here; her subtlety and depth are astounding”.

Shields is being interviewed to promote her new movie, A castle for Christmas, now available on Netflix.
