Brooke Shields and Christopher Atkins Recall Awkward Nude Scenes in ‘The Blue Lagoon’

The Blue Lagoon follows two young cousins who become lovers and are shipwrecked on a tropical island in the South Pacific.

Stars Brooke Shields and Christopher Atkins reunited on Shields’ iHeartRadio podcast – and decided the 1980 film wouldn’t be shot today.

“There’s never going to be a movie like this made again,” Shields admitted on Tuesday’s episode of “Now What?” “That would not be allowed.”

“Animals were injured in the film. We’ve speared fish and all sorts of crazy things. Kids run naked down a beach,” she shared.

The coming-of-age film featured a lot of nudity – Shields was only 14 at the time of filming and Atkins was just 18.

Shields, 57, and Atkins, 61, claim the production team wanted the pair to develop an off-screen relationship.

“They really wanted us to fall in love,” the actress revealed.

Because Shields was so young when she played Emmeline and hadn’t actually kissed anyone, she said she “didn’t respond well to being forced to feel anything.”

“That was probably great for the film because that’s what it was all about. You have to admit, the chemistry between us was just incredible,” Atkins replied.

“There were a lot of great, great moments that happened there, and I think it was a lot of that innocence that came out in the film that made it work even better,” he continued.

Shields admits she actually had body doubling for sex scenes – but Atkins didn’t.

He shared that he grew up in a conservative neighborhood, which made him feel strange about being naked in front of others.

“It was hard to put my clothes on after that movie,” Atkins quipped.

“There were scenes where I was stark naked with you, if you remember, going down the slide and stuff like that. And that was a little bit awkward, but it was kind of fun for me because at that point I was just going to do it. But your reaction was [annoyed sounds]’ said Atkins.

Atkins also recalled that he and Shields were instructed to tan nude prior to filming to avoid tan lines.

“We wore small garments and my hair was taped to my body to cover the breasts, which were very small anyway,” Shields recalled. “I don’t know what I was trying to cover up. Do you remember the bumpy pads? They put these little flesh-colored things on my nipples because ‘nipple’ was obviously where they drew the line in this film.”

Filming nude was more than awkward – the actors said they sustained injuries from swarms of bugs, crabs, rats and horses.

“I was worn out to the end,” Atkins added.
