Brandon Tierney cancels interview with Paul O’Neill about Josh Donaldson

YES Network’s Paul O’Neill was supposed to be promoting his new book ‘Swing and a Hit’ on Monday on WFAN, but instead he never stepped on the plate.

WFAN’s morning show Tiki & Tierney canceled O’Neill’s appearance Tuesday after being told the former Yankees outfielder would not be discussing the incident between Josh Donaldson and Tim Anderson, in which Donaldson referred to Anderson as “Jackie.” “ referred to.

The program had spent most of the first hour and a half prior to O’Neill’s appearance on the subject, but was told that O’Neill would not be answering questions on the subject.

Brandon Tierney made the decision, which he revealed on air, when O’Neill was to be featured.

“We’re supposed to be taking him now and he’s on hold, OK,” said Tierney, who listed O’Neill as his second favorite Yankee of all time, after Don Mattingly.

“He has a new book out called ‘Swing and a Hit.’ And Jack Curry co-wrote it with Paul. We were told and Tiki you don’t even know this because I went through this while you finished your train of thought on air. We were told we can’t ask anything about Donaldson and Anderson.

“I said, ‘We can’t do the interview if that’s the case.’ I said, ‘Please tell Paul, we’ll handle it responsibly. We won’t take care of it. But I can’t have Paul O’Neill on the show after we’ve spent an hour and 35 minutes talking about Tim Anderson and Josh Donaldson and not asking him what happened. That sucks. No disrespect to Paul. I love him. Truly my second favorite Yankee of all time. We have a responsibility to the show.”

A message from The Post to O’Neill and to Grand Central Publishing’s media relations contact was not immediately answered.

O’Neill had been in the news this year. He has announced games from his Ohio home while fellow YES announcers such as Michael Kay, David Cone, Carlos Beltran and Cameron Maybin have worked from the dressing rooms at stadiums. YES policy is that on-site staff must be vaccinated against COVID-19.
