Boris warns he risks dissolving the Union if he doesn’t fix the Northern Ireland border line soon

BORIS Johnson has been warned Sinn Fein will come to power in Northern Ireland and break up the UK if he doesn’t fix the Brexit border check fence.

DUP heavyweight opponent Ian Paisley Jr said any further delay would only “frustrate the republicans in Northern Ireland and those who want to separate us from the UK.”

Britain is arguing with Brussels over the implementation of the Northern Ireland Protocol, which forces inspection of goods traveling from the mainland to Ulster.

Mr Johnson has threatened to trigger an emergency Article 16-breaking clause to suspend rules that he says are crippling trade – but is locked in negotiations with the EU to try to avoid having to do so.

However, Mr Paisley, the MP for North Antrim, has warned that time is running out to tackle that threat – or risk the nationalists winning next year’s provincial election. this.

The unionist’s large wig told The Sun that Mr Johnson risked going down in history as a lousy Prime Minister if he was soft on his tough talk.

Amid Cabinet concerns that the Prime Minister was “shaken”, Mr Paisley said that Sinn Fein was joining the march and risked taking control of Stormont if the stalemate continued any longer – opening beginning of years of controversy over Irish reunification.

This is a do or die moment for the Prime Minister. The past 12 months have cost Northern Ireland dearly.

“The activation of Article 16 is long overdue. This is a legitimate and proportionate response to the failed Protocol that disrupted the UK’s internal trade, increased the UK’s internal costs, created political instability and tensions. It’s getting tense here.

SINN FEIN IN “POLL LOCATION”

“As long as Boris Johnson keeps this failing status quo, he will only attract the republicans in Northern Ireland and those who want to separate us from the UK.

“Let’s make it clear to the Prime Minister if this situation remains unchanged. Sinn Fein is in a polling position to take advantage of the election.

“And they will be given a platform to ask Ulster to remove the Alliance. Is that an outcome you can be satisfied with, Boris?

“I told the Prime Minister, the alarm is sounding. The alliance is being sabotaged. It’s time to act.

“Regain control of the whole of Great Britain or history will not be good for your role as Union manager.”

Yesterday, Northern Ireland Minister Brandon Lewis said he was “optimistic” when it came to the prospect of reaching an agreement with the EU on the Protocol, but triggering Article 16 remained on the table because of the “real distance” substance” remains between the two sides.

He spoke in a hopeful tone after Ireland’s Foreign Minister Simon Coveney said on Wednesday that reaching an agreement on protocol before Christmas was “unrealistic”.

Brexit Secretary Lord Frost previously said both Britain and the EU wanted the dispute “to be resolved in one way or another” before winter.

A government spokesman said: “The bottom line is that the EU proposals do not go far enough to address the real problems facing Northern Irish people because of the Protocol.

“We obviously want to agree solutions, but if we can’t, we will have to use the safeguard provisions in the Protocol to maintain stability in Northern Ireland.

“The EU urgently needs to show more realism and flexibility if we are to find an agreed way.”
