Experts believe that rolling out promotions for children aged 5 to 11 could be the key to preventing educational disruptions due to staff shortages.

Professor Russell Viner believes the “balance of risks” dictates that students should be vaccinated.

Professor Viner, from University College London, is an expert in child and adolescent health and a member of SAGE.

He believes that although the age group is least affected by covid, if they are stabbed it can prevent the spread of the virus to employees.

Talk to I He said: “The age group between 5 and 11 is probably the group least affected by Covid disease.

“The thing about Covid is that it has the most unusual age risk profile… to be honest, 5 to 11 is the healthiest time of our lives.

“It’s the time when we’re least likely to die or get sick from most things, and that’s true of Covid.

“However, I do expect and I would like the Government to factor in education and mental health issues, which is what happens to young people.

“I think it’s a very marginal medical decision, but if you include broader issues.

“I think with the extremely promising safety profile in children – but I think the balance of risks is towards vaccination.

“We can be pretty sure that this is indeed a very safe vaccine for children aged 5 to 11 years old.”
