Bono “woke up in Abraham Lincoln’s bedroom” after having cocktails with Barack Obama

Bono recalls waking up in Abraham Lincoln’s former White House bedroom after drinking “strong cocktails” with then-President Barack Obama.

The U2 frontman had been visiting the Obama family with his wife Alison Hewson when Obama fixed the couple a few drinks.

“He’s the most extraordinary man and they’re the most extraordinary family,” Bono said in a BBC Radio 2 interview with presenter Zoe Ball.

“The 44th President of the United States mixes cocktails; He doesn’t have too many, he’s very measured.”

Bono explained how he had an allergy to salicylates, which are found in things like red wine, which causes his “head to swell up like a balloon” or causes him to “fall asleep somewhere.”

Bono described the “special moment” the pair were invited to, explaining how he snuck off for a nap after drinking the cocktails and wine.

“I had her and the wine and the allergy and I ended up slipping out on a kip and the President said to Ali after about 10 minutes, ‘Where’s Bono gone?’

“She said, ‘He just went to sleep.’ [Obama] said, ‘I’m sorry?'” the frontman recalled.

“She said, ‘He has to, he just has to go to bed for these, he’ll be back in 10 minutes. I’ve been with him for 30 years, don’t worry about him Mr President. I’ll find him’.”

But Obama insisted on coming with Hewson to find her husband, who they discovered sleeping in Abraham Lincoln’s bedroom.

“He says, ‘No, no, no.’ And he comes with her and (says) where can he be…? I know he asked me for the Gettysburg Address, Lincolns’.

“And there I was in Lincoln’s bedroom, asleep, asleep in the bosom of Abraham himself,” he continued. “He just woke me up and laughed. The President laughed himself to death.”

“But he tells people he drinks me under the table, he doesn’t believe in the allergy,” Bono added. “He makes strong cocktails though, to put it bluntly.”

The 62-year-old said it wasn’t the first time he’d fallen asleep in a strange place: “I’ve fallen asleep in really awkward spots; the Sonic Youth lighting desk – they mingled around me and couldn’t be prettier.

“I’ve slept on the streets, on car hoods and actually I fell asleep in the White House and they were really, really good at it.”

Bono’s memoirs Surrender: 40 songs, one story out today (November 1st).

During an interview about the book, he revealed that both he and his family had received violent threats against them throughout his career. Bono “woke up in Abraham Lincoln’s bedroom” after having cocktails with Barack Obama
