BONITA SPRINGS, Fla. – A Bonita Springs man has been sentenced to prison for defrauding a cheese importer and veterinarian’s office in inspection fraud schemes.
Matthew Welty was an employee of a cheese import company in Bonita Springs for 15 years. Prosecutors said Welty entered the transactions into a computer as business expenses while doing her own checks.
Welty did this with 110 checks, coming in at $466,419.25.
He was found guilty of one count of grand theft of more than $100,000 and sentenced to eight years in prison, followed by 20 years of probation. Welty was also ordered to pay more than $466,000 that he had stolen in compensation.
While the case was being investigated, Welty was also hired by a local veterinary group through a temporary agency, the State Attorney’s Office said.
While he worked for the veterinary team, Welty wrote three checks to himself by forging a veterinarian’s name. Checks total $11,515.
He was found guilty in the second case of one count of using identification. Welty was sentenced to eight years in prison, followed by seven years of probation. He was also ordered to pay $11,515 in restitution.
Both prison sentences will be served simultaneously.
During the probationary period, Welty will have to file an annual tax return.
