Bodies of 4 US Marines killed in NATO exercises recovered

The bodies of four US Marines killed in a plane crash were recovered during a NATO exercise on Friday, officials said.

The victims’ MV-22B Osprey was reported missing around 6:30 p.m. local time after failing to report back from a training mission in Nordland County in northern Norway, the Norwegian Armed Forces said in a statement.

According to Norwegian officials, a Norwegian rescue helicopter and a Norwegian military aircraft spotted the wreckage. Initial rescue efforts were thwarted by poor weather conditions.

The dead Marines were among 30,000 NATO troops taking part in annual military exercises 200 miles from the Russia-Norway border. This is reported by the US military news agency Stars and Stripes.

The drills are not related to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine but mark the largest military exercises in Norway since the end of the Cold War, officials said.
