Blur’s Graham Coxon says he worried “every hour of the day” about “freaked out” fans

Blur’s guitarist Graham Coxon has spoken openly about his worries during the peak of the band’s success.

Coxon said he struggled to deal with the fame and attention of some of the band’s more obsessive fans, whom he described as “unhinged.”

“You get disturbed people. People who are obsessive,” the 53-year-old said in an interview The idle.

Coxon explained that being intrusive has caused him to worry constantly and suffer from insomnia.

“Until it happens to you, you don’t really realize what a nightmare this is,” he said.

“Haven’t slept for months and months. Worries every day, every hour of the day. It was awful,” he added.

Some superfans even strained to have engagements to Coxon’s girlfriends in the 1990s, he recalled.

“You’d be on tour and your girlfriend would have all these suitors trying to get together with your girlfriend.

“Because fair enough if they like your girlfriend, but if they’re trying to get together with her because she’s dating you…”

“I realized there was a world of super meanness that I didn’t know existed,” he added.

Last month, the Britpop band announced a reunion show planned for summer 2023.

The band will play Wembley Stadium next July, making it Blur’s first headlining show since 2015.

The performance will see the reunion of Coxon, Damon Albarn, Alex James and Dave Rowntree for the band’s first ever performance at Wembley Stadium.

Support comes from electro-pop duo Jockstrap, British rapper Slowthai and Self Esteem.

“We really love playing these songs and thought it was time we did it again,” Alborn said at the time of the announcement.

“It’s always something very special when the four of us come into a room. It’s nice to think that on July 8th that room will be Wembley Stadium,” added James.
