Blondie release previously unheard demo of ‘Go Through It’

Blondie released a previously unheard version of “Go Through It” from their 1980 album Autoamerican.

The early demo was originally called “I Love You Honey, Give Me a Beer” and was shared prior to the release of the band’s new box set Against the Odds: 1974-1982.

Produced and written by Chris Stein, the track features the original lyrics sung by Debbie Harry.

“Now she says to me/ Please, please, please, please/ When she said/ Please do it for me,” Harry originally sings in the first verse.

It’s fascinating to hear her lengthen those old words to fit the familiar tune, and for Blondie fans the release offers a great opportunity to watch the band figure out where the song would eventually lead.

The demo’s simplification is endearing: while it lacks the prominent brass that usually signals we’re about to ‘go through’, the space makes room for the percussion to shine.

In a previous statement about the box set, Harry said: “I’m delighted with this special collection. Listening to these old tracks transports me there like I’m a time traveller. As bad as it was sometimes, it was also good. No regret. More music.”

Guitarist Chris Stein agreed: “Some of this stuff is like early sketches; The old tape machines are like primitive notebooks. The hardest thing for me was always getting the tunes out of my head into reality and the changes that would happen along the way.

“I’m confident that this project will provide an insight into the ‘process’ and part of the journey the songs have taken from idea to final form,” he added.
