Marvel Studios blade was hit by turmoil behind the scenes when director Bassam Tariq left the project just weeks before filming began.
The film stars double Oscar winner Mahershala Ali as vampire-hunting superhero Eric Cross Brooks, aka Blade.
blade Filming was scheduled to begin in Atlanta in November. News of Tariq’s departure was first reported by The Hollywood Reporterwho noted it is “unclear” how the exit will affect the production schedule.
“Due to ongoing shifts in our production schedule, Bassam is no longer moving as director of blade but he will remain executive producer on the film,” Marvel said in a statement to the outlet.
“We appreciate Bassam’s talent and all the work he has done blade to where it is.”
While Marvel’s statement seems to indicate that the filmmaker’s exit from the project was simply the result of a scheduling issue, there have also been unconfirmed rumors of more behind-the-scenes glitches.
Journalist Jeff Sneider claimed on Twitter that he was told by someone familiar with the project that the current script stands for blade is “around 90 pages” long – unusually short for a film of this size. He also claimed that the script contained only two “lacklustre” action sequences.
“Mahershala [is] reportedly very frustrated with the process,” he claimed. “[Marvel Studios boss Kevin] Fig should be spread too thin. But hey, only sources tell me that.”
The Independent has reached out to Marvel Studios and Mahershala Ali for comment.
blade is scheduled to hit theaters on November 3, 2023.
