Amazon’s latest update to Alexa was a reminder of this black mirror Fans of one of the scariest episodes of the series.

The latest feature added to the virtual assistant allows him to speak in the voice of the dead, eerily reminiscent of the first episode of the second season of the British sci-fi drama.

In the episode “Be Right Back,” which aired in 2013, a character is shown befriending an android built to copy her dead partner’s behavior.

While the update has yet to be released – the tool was demoed as part of a concept by Amazon, when in fact it appears to be real and available for Amazon itself – fans on Twitter have reacted in horror to the news.

This feature only requires one minute of recorded audio to be fed into the system. Artificial intelligence can then use that recording to construct an entire voice, Rohit Prasad, Amazon’s chief scientist for Alexa AI, said in an announcement.

Amazon noted that Alexa would speak this way, “not eliminate [the] pain of loss”. But it said it hoped the new Alexa voices would “make their memories last,” citing the pandemic and the fact that “so many of us have lost someone we love.”
