SANTA MONICA, California — Bill Cosby faces renewed sexual abuse allegations Wednesday as attorneys make opening statements in a civil lawsuit that is one of the last remaining legal claims against the comedian.
Lawyers for 64-year-old Judy Huth will outline evidence they intend to present that Cosby forced her to have a sex act at the Playboy Mansion in 1975 at the age of 16. The case will depend on Huth’s testimony, which will be supported by photographs and other archival materials to date the incident.
Cosby’s attorneys, who say no sexual abuse took place, are likely to emphasize that the burden of proof in the nearly 50-year-old case rests entirely with the plaintiffs. They have admitted that Cosby brought Huth to the Playboy Mansion, according to a photo from the visit, but say they believe she was not underage when it happened.
The trial is one of the last cases Cosby, 85, will face after a Pennsylvania appeals court overturned his sexual assault conviction and released him from prison 11 months ago. Several other lawsuits alleging sexual misconduct were settled by his insurer against his will.
Cosby will not testify after the judge ruled he can assert his Fifth Amendment privilege against self-incrimination. And he has no plans to leave his home in Pennsylvania to attend the trial, which is taking place in a small Santa Monica courthouse. Cosby’s reps say glaucoma has blinded him and made travel too difficult.
The Associated Press does not typically name people who say they have been sexually abused unless they come forward publicly, as Huth did.
