Biden government ‘profiting’ from Ukraine war: EU officials

A group of senior European officials are fed up with the Biden administration, which they view as war profiteers during the Ukraine conflict.

The comments come amid rising gas prices and growing tensions over US legislation offering tax credits to those who “buy American.”

Meanwhile, Putin’s invasion of Ukraine is pushing European economies into recession while the US is benefiting, some officials claim.

“The fact is that the country that is soberly benefiting most from this war is the US because they are selling more gas and at higher prices and because they are selling more arms,” a senior EU official told POLITICO.

The European Union has turned to the US for gas to reduce dependence on Russian fuel – but the price the EU is reportedly paying is four times what Americans are shelling out for the same product.

Many European countries are struggling with oil shortages.

“The United States sells us its gas with a multiplier effect of four when it crosses the Atlantic,” said Thierry Breton, EU Commissioner for the Internal Market, on French television on Wednesday. “Of course, the Americans are our allies … but when something goes wrong, it has to be said between allies, too.”

The Biden government has firmly denied the price hike allegations, instead blaming the Ukraine conflict for the high costs.

“The rise in gas prices in Europe is caused by Putin’s invasion of Ukraine and Putin’s energy war on Europe, period,” a spokesman for Biden’s National Security Council told Politico.

The dispute is exacerbated by Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act, a massive tax, health and climate package that offers tax credits to those who buy American-made electric vehicles, raising concern among European automakers.

“No one wants to get caught in a tit-for-tat or subsidy race. But what the US has done is really not in line with the principles of free trade and fair competition,” Irish Trade Minister Leo Varadkar said during an emergency EU Commission meeting on Friday, according to Fortune.
