Benedict Cumberbatch joked about being “beaten by Will Smith” at the Oscars while hosting this weekend Saturday night live (May 7th).

The actor currently starring in the title role in Marvel’s doctor strange in the multiverse of madness, He opened his monologue by pointing out that most of the sketches he was suggested for the show revolved around the character. “Most were about Doctor Strange,” he said. “I love the guy, I love playing the character, the movie is doing really well but I’ve been in other movies!”

Cumberbatch then joked about it Saturday night live Chef Lorne Michaels had asked him, “Like what?” Cumberbatch said he replied, “‘Well, The power of the dog for the beginning.’ He said, “Nobody saw it.” I said, ‘C’mon man, I got nominated for an Oscar for that!’ I didn’t win. I was beaten by Will Smith.”

After the audience laughed, Cumberbatch clarified, “Not physically! Not physically!”

Cumberbatch had been nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role, the award Smith ultimately won for his performance in King Richard.
