Beacon’s ugly mask train defies science

Masks were taken off Monday for NYC school kids (except tragically for the very young). This move, months overdue, was greeted with glee by parents and children alike – but rejected by many adult stakeholders.

Elite Beacon HS director Brady Smith had his own mask-off moment. “While teachers cannot mandate a mask in their classroom.” He wrote parents“You can require students to wear one.”

Teacher did Inquiry. And children (of course) followed. What choice did they have?

We’ve seen this ugly story over and over again during the pandemic: school closures, teachers’ terror campaigns surrounding reopening, senseless hygiene theatre.

The lifting of the mask mandates should have ended this madness. Obviously it hasn’t.

If you’re dealing with anxious teachers and power-obsessed administrators like Smith (who blew his stack last March because of parental criticism), children suffer.

The facts again: Under 18s are not at real risk from COVID. Fewer than 900 of them have died in the United States in two years of the pandemic. of almost 945,000 deaths in total. And most of these children had serious comorbidities.

The data also does not show mask requirements that stop transmission within the school and thus protect teachers. Like social distancing, it once seemed A good idea, but experience has proven otherwise.

Regarding ours real Weapon against COVID – vaccines – Beacons children are overwhelmingly stung; about 90% have both had their shots.

Worse, under New York rules, that’s every school in the state follow freely Beacon. The city’s Department of Education says “the decision to wear a face covering or not is now entirely up to students, parents and staff,” but it’s clear that students and parents have no say unless they want to, with staff to go to war.

Mayor Eric Adams and Gov. Kathy Hochul need to clarify their policies: Masking in New York schools is purely voluntary, and teachers or administrators who try to get children to wear their masks face real consequences.
