‘Be angry! Be sad! To run! To run! RUN!”: Stanley Tucci says he “never quite knows what I’m doing” while acting on the green screen

Stanley Tucci has admitted that he “never quite knows what he’s doing” when filming in front of a green screen.

appearing on the off menu Podcast on Wednesday (Nov. 23), Tucci spoke about appearing in films that rely on special effects, and admitted he found green-screen acting a little difficult.
“You don’t know what you’re doing,” said the 62-year-old. “You have no idea what’s happening.
“It all happens so fast and there are guys with tennis balls on big sticks who say, ‘Look over there! Look there! Be scared! Be angry! Be sad! To run! To run! RUN!’ I never know exactly what I’m doing, but I just do what they say.”
When asked which of his green screen films created the most impressive scenes, Tucci said the Transformers series. The actor starred as Joshua Joyce Age of Annihilation 2014 and returned as Merlin in The Last Knight.
“Someone like [director] Michael Bay, he has these images in his head, he’s always been making these films,” Tucci said.
They’re pretty impressive when you think about it. He does it so fast. For many people it will be quite a tedious process. But he’ll say, ‘Just do it like that, do that, do that, don’t worry, I’ll put it in later.’ Everything is, ‘I’ll put it in later’… He’ll probably put us in later. That will happen one day.”
Host Ed Gamble joked that one day the film production process would just consist of three tennis balls facing each other, to which Tucci replied, “Well, eventually it will be… That’s what Roger Federer will do next.”
The actor said, “You don’t know what you’re doing” during green screen films.

Tucci previously criticized green screen acting in a 2013 interview when he revealed why he disliked making 3D movies.

“You end up doing a lot of stuff in front of a green screen, it’s not really exciting for an actor,” he said.
Other celebrities have also recently commented on the process, with Christian Bale saying he found it “repetitive” when he shot Thor: Love and Thunder.
“Can you tell one day from the other?” he said. “No. Absolutely not. You have no idea what to do. I couldn’t even tell one stage from the next.
“They kept saying, ‘You’re on Level Three.’ Well, it’s like, “Which one is that?” ‘The blue.’ They say: “Yes. But you’re on level seven.’ ‘What is it?’ ‘The blue.’ I was like, ‘Er, where?’”
