Baby Food Shortage: Sheila Jackson gave away baby food in Third Ward

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — In the face of the nationwide baby food shortage, people across the community are joining forces to help others who are struggling to find food for their babies.

Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee hosted a drive-through giveaway this afternoon where hundreds of cars could get their hands on formulas.

Dozens of families waited in a line that wrapped around a Third Precinct high school on Saturday, hoping to get their hands on baby formula.

“People use whatever they can to survive. So it was kind of a struggle,” said a Houston mom, Brittinee Johnson.

Brittinee Johnson has a newborn named Maverick and says finding baby formula for him has been frustrating.

“Yeah, sometimes it’s a bit of an anxiety attack. I’m making sure month by month since he’s just a newborn he just got here. It’s a bit of a struggle,” Johnson said.

A similar struggle faced by many in this line.

Ashley Woods, a Houston mom, says she previously had to go to six stores to find what she needed.

“My goddaughter needs milk, and so does my son,” Woods said.

The National Association of Christian Churches and Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee hosted the distribution to help at least 300 families.

“When you see those cars and moms, you can understand why I felt it was important to come home from Washington,” Jackson Lee said.

Congresswoman Jackson Lee says 43% of baby food supplies are out of stock across the country.

People in the queue tell us they’re beginning to feel heard but need action.

“It’s time we ramped up the Food and Drug Administration and see if there are any issues with the products we’re importing. I want to make sure everything is safe and secure. My concern is getting the product where it’s housed and getting it on the road,” Jackson Lee said Saturday afternoon.

Right now, moms like Brittinee Johnson are doing whatever it takes to keep babies like Maverick fed and healthy.
