Avatar: The Way of Water is now out of review embargo and has an initial Rotten Tomatoes score of 83%. If this stays at that level or higher as more critic ratings come in, it means that Avatar 2 will enjoy a better Rotten Tomatoes rating than its 2009 predecessor, which clocked in at 82%. Not an easy task for a film with a running time of over three hours.

ComicBook praised The Way of Water with a perfect 5/5 score, calling it a “modern odyssey” that “features an unmatched third act that capitalizes on nearly every minute detail set up in the first two hours.” Meanwhile, Collider says this is a “reboot for Pandora” and calls the film “a remarkable achievement that fixes the problems of the first film.”

Of course, there are also those who didn’t like the film. Variety said the film was “a workable set of clichés” with “bare dialogue,” while AwardsAce editor Erick Weber went to twitter to describe the feature as “emotionally numbing and punishingly long”.

Given all of this, though, it’s clear that Avatar 2 is a movie worth watching for the vast majority. Let’s hope those who watch Avatar: The Way of Water enjoy it as much as it did at the box office when it opened on December 16th most this critic.
