MELBOURNE (Reuters) – Australia seeks to join others in imposing direct sanctions on Russian President Vladimir Putin and has extended punitive financial measures to members of parliament. Russia and other oligarchs, Foreign Minister Marise Payne said on Saturday.

The United States, Canada, the European Union and Britain said they would impose sanctions on Putin and Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, as Washington wants to increase pressure on Moscow following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

“It’s an exceptional step to punish leaders, but this is an exceptional situation,” Payne told a news conference, adding that the government was seeking advice on how to follow the guidelines. other countries in this move.

“Vladimir Putin has unparalleled personal power over his country and he has chosen to go to war against a neighboring country that poses no threat to Russia, because he wants to reverse history and take freedom and democracy that the Ukrainian people have chosen for themselves. ”

In the new sanctions, Payne said Australia would target 339 members of the State Duma, the lower house of Russia’s parliament and eight more oligarchs. The new measures follow a series of Australian sanctions announced earlier this week.

“The next immediate priority is continuing sanctions against Vladimir Putin’s internal affairs and on Russia’s defense industry,” Payne said.
