The Australian has won three Grand Slams and is the reigning one Wimbledon and Australian Open Champion.

But she says she takes time away from her career to “chase other dreams.”

Barty said: “Success for me is knowing that I’ve given everything I could – I’m fulfilled, I’m happy and I know how much work it takes to be the best you can be.

“I’ve said it to my team several times, it’s just that I don’t have that in me, I don’t have the physical drive, the emotional desire – everything it takes to challenge yourself to the highest level.

Barty added: “I know people might not get it and I’m okay with that because to me, Ash Barty has so many dreams to chase that it’s not necessarily about traveling the world and of me away from my family, away from my homeland, where I always wanted to be, where I grew up.

“I will never stop loving tennisit will always be a big part of my life, but now I think it’s important that I get to enjoy the next phase of my life as Ash Barty the person, not Ash Barty the athlete.”

Barty is an avid athlete off the tennis court.

She was also a budding professional cricketer and played in the women’s Big Bash League in 2014 after taking a break from tennis.

Barty represented Brisbane Heat in the WBBL and played a few games.

WTA Chief Executive Steve Simon said: “Ashleigh Barty, with her signature slice backhand complemented by the ultimate contender, has always led by example with the unwavering professionalism and athleticism she brought to every match.

“With her successes in the Grand Slams, the WTA Finals and reaching the top position as No. 1 in the world, she has clearly established herself as one of the great champions of the WTA.”
