ATM theft chain continues at BP Gas Station – CBS Baltimore

BALTIMORE (WJZ) – Baltimore police confirmed a driver used a van to rush through a gas station to steal an ATM Saturday morning.

Surveillance video obtained by WJZ shows the driver crashing into a BP gas station on Reisterstown Road shortly after 5:15 a.m. The driver backed into the store repeatedly until the glass broke.

Two men standing near the front of the store were arrested as they went inside, picked up an ATM, and got into a truck. The incident happened in less than 2 minutes, the security camera timestamp revealed.

“It’s extremely scary because like I said, we’ve seen it happen on the news and there’s nothing to prepare you for when it happens to you,” said store manager Hiwot Goitom.

Goitom said she is contacting the police and local leaders in the hope of working together to create better protections for businesses that provide ATM services to customers.

“Is there a need for more help? How do we control the highly organized crime that is affecting many stations in the area? ‘ Goitom asked.

Earlier, the police gave some suggestions to business owners on proactive ways to protect their machines. This includes using larger bolts to secure ATMs, placing barriers in front of stores, and moving machines inside to make it harder for thieves to bring them to a car.

In the most recent case in a string of ATM thefts around the city and county of Baltimore, police have not released descriptions of the suspects. The card on the car is also unknown.
