The man accused of attacking comedian Dave Chappelle onstage with a replica gun and knife during a performance has been charged with attempted murder in a separate case.
Isaiah Lee, 23, was accused of stabbing his roommate during a fight at a transitional apartment on December 2 last year, the Los Angeles County Attorney’s Office said in a statement Thursday.
“The publicity generated by the attack on Mr. Chappelle helped police solve this crime,” Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascón said in the statement.
“Due to the nature and seriousness of the attack in December, Mr. Lee now faces criminal charges, which my office will prosecute,” he added.
The roommate was not identified by police.
It comes as the DA’s Los Angeles office failed to file felony charges against Mr Lee in a high-profile case involving the alleged assault on Chappelle. Instead, he faces four misdemeanor charges in the case.
He was arrested on May 3 on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, later revealed to be a replica handgun. Police said he ran onto the stage Netflix it’s a joke Festival in Los Angeles and pounced on the comedian.
Chappelle was not injured in the incident. His security personnel managed to free the attacker from him.
Prosecutors found that while the incident constituted criminal conduct, the evidence presented did not constitute criminal conduct. The DA’s office does not prosecute misdemeanor crimes in LA.
Police later confirmed that the gun, which appeared to be a pistol, had a knife blade.
Mr. Lee pleaded not guilty to both counts.
His attorney, Chelsea Padilla, told a judge that he is receiving psychological help from a local nonprofit.
Mr Lee’s roommate identified him as the person who committed an assault on him after the media reported the attack on the comedian, the statement said.
He had previously reported the case to the police, but it is not known why he did not give his name.
