Asmongold fears there’s “no escape” from pay-to-win gaming going forward

Asmongold worries that there will be “no escape” from pay-to-win games in the future, claiming that this will become the norm while non-pay-to-win games are “less and less.”

Asmon has been at the forefront of the pay-to-win debate since Lost Ark launched in February. Not only did he claim that the game was losing players to pay-to-win raids, but he also threatened to expose the full extent of it.

Shortly after, he even called on MMO players to band together to stop pay-to-win microtransactions from ruining games, though he admitted it felt like a “losing battle.” During an April 13 stream, he explained why.

Asmon criticizes pay-to-win features in games like Lost Ark.

“I think pay-to-win gaming is the future,” he said. “I think more games are going to be pay-to-win. That’s exactly what will happen. Will there always be games like Elden Ring? Yes. But it’s like entropy. It will become less and less.”

Asmon also predicted that attitudes would change. “People are looked down on and seen as socially inferior for not connecting to the pay-to-win schemes. There will be social pressure in games to interact with these pay-to-win features.”

Then, when a fan said he would quit gaming if that happened, he said, “What are you going to do instead of playing online? Going back to real life where there’s even more pay-to-win? There is no escape! There is no escape from that.”

Pay-to-win features have been widely criticized. Players have found things they believe fall into this category across everything from Call of Duty to Fortnite and even Valorant and they are not happy about it.

However, pay-to-win features have been a standout in the industry for a number of years, and while some might say they’re not the “norm” just yet, Asmon insists it’s only a matter of time before they are there are.
