MIKEL ARTETA has been left with his Arsenal side after they were knocked out of the FA Cup by Nottingham Forest on Sunday night.
The 83rd-minute winner came after Arsenal’s poor performance – which included Nuno Tavares coming on for Kieran Tierney after just 35 minutes after a nightmarish performance.
The left-back was angry when he was substituted and Arteta revealed in his post-match interview why he made the decision.
He told ITV: “I’m just doing it to try to improve the team’s performance.
“I understand that but I had to make a decision to try to improve the team’s performance when things didn’t go the other way.”
Arsenal is still in Carabao Cup – where they face Liverpool in the first leg semi-final on Thursday.
But FA Cup is the only chance left for the Gunners to win some silverware this season – an opportunity that has now become difficult.
And Arteta, who won the FA Cup in his first season in charge in 2020, was forced to issue an apology and apology from supporters after the game.
“They won, they scored a goal and we didn’t,” he added. “We weren’t good enough and we have to apologize for that.
“I don’t want to make excuses, I hope the team I put up will do better and when you don’t win, you’re out.
“Today showed that we are not qualified to win against Forest away and did not put enough quality to win the game.
“It was a collective problem and we didn’t make it today.”
He said: “It’s trash. They look like Real Madrid but they’re playing like a pub team.
“There’s still a softness. We’re watching live here and thinking: ‘Arsenal are here to take over’.
“They didn’t show any presence on them. Arsenal deserved everything they got today. It was a big step back for them today.”
Arsenal now turn their attention to the Carabao Cup first leg clash with Liverpool at Anfield on Thursday.
Arteta’s side then have just 72 hours to recover before they travel to rivals Tottenham in North London Premier League.
