Wildfires have forced people to evacuate Maui, but are flights to the island of Hawaii canceled?
Evacuations are currently taking place on Maui due to wildfires and the situation is not expected to improve anytime soon as the winds from Hurricane Dora rage across the island and also affect Lahaina. Videos from the island went viral on social media, with people expressing concern for residents and travelers. Hawaii Gov. Josh Green noted that “some loss of life” is expected as the situation is uncertain.

Are flights to Maui being cancelled?
Flights to Maui are being canceled as the airport is currently hosting around 1,800 travelers stranded there due to the wildfires.
The Hawaii Department of Transportation noted that all airlines are sending additional supplies to Kahului Airport to ensure everyone is evacuated from the island. Previously, all non-essential travelers were asked to cancel their tickets.
Many routes are currently closed due to smoke and poor visibility. Lahaina Bypass by Kai Hele Ku is one of them.

Airlines allow rebooking of flight tickets
Many airlines have come forward, offering to postpone passenger tickets as damage from Hawaii’s wildfires mounts.
Hawaiian Airlines, American Airlines, Southwest Airlines and United Airlines have waived change fees for travel to and from Kahului Airport on the island of Maui.
In an opinion on it CNNHawaiian Airlines said, “Hawaii discourages non-essential travel to Kahului and we support our guests with flexible ways to change their flights.” The safety of our guests and employees, including our teammates who live and work on Maui, is paramount our priority and we will continue to support the state in its ongoing response.”

The governor of Hawaii says some loss of life is expected
Hawaii Gov. Green indicated that some deaths are to be expected as the situation on Maui is unpredictable. In his opinionhe noted, “The heroic efforts of first responders have prevented many casualties, but some deaths are expected.”
“We have experienced a terrible disaster in the form of a wildfire that has spread widely due to hurricane winds in the region and underlying drought conditions. Serious fires broke out on both Maui and the Big Island. Much of Lāhainā on Maui was destroyed and hundreds of native families were displaced,” he further noted.
Green indicated that he plans to send a disaster declaration request to President Joe Biden after a damage assessment is made.
