AOC just a “phantom media” with no real influence, ex-government. says Paterson

Former New York Governor David Paterson dismissed the influence of US Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez as a “phantom of the media” after left-wing progressives backed by the Socialist firebrand suffered brutal losses in last week’s primary.

“AOC is just three letters in the alphabet,” the 68-year-old Democrat said in an interview on WABC Radio’s The Cats Roundtable that aired Sunday.

Paterson was asked by host John Catsimatidis about Tuesday’s primary results, which saw a majority of left-wing candidates for the State Assembly unsuccessful in their efforts to expand their presence in Albany by toppling more moderate Democrats.

When asked if the losses represented “the rise and fall of AOC,” the former Democratic governor replied, “I don’t know if there’s ever been a rise, John.”

“I think AOC, which took down a congressman who was particularly absent from his district, so she surpassed him and she beat him, and then overnight she became this national success,” Paterson said, referring to the longtime ex-US MP. Joe Crowley, whose AOC was overthrown in a major upset in the June 2018 Democratic primary for the Queens and Bronx House seat.

“But really, there is no evidence that there were any coattails, not in this 2022 primary, but not even in the 2020 election,” he added. “I think she’s really a phantom of the media, the media is projecting her.”

Paterson also cast doubt on the narrative that Ocasio-Cortez's opposition was largely responsible for getting Amazon to pull out in February 2019.

In last week’s primary election, mainstream Democrats defeated AOC-backed State Assembly hopefuls Samy Nemir Olivares Keron Alleyne, Illapa Sairitupac and Vanessa Agudelo, among others.

Paterson cited the nationwide competition — in which Hochul and her handpicked Lt. gov. Antonio Delgado to victory – proving that New Yorkers don’t buy what AOC-leaning politicians are selling.

“If you look at the gubernatorial primary, Hochul got 66%, [New York City Public Advocate] Jumaane Williams gets 16% and so she beat the progressive by 50 points and the other 18% or so went to [moderate US Rep.] Tom Suozzi,” he told Catsimatidis.

Ocasio-Cortez, 32, gave her approval to Williams’ running mate Ana María Archila but did not interfere in the governor’s race.

Paterson also cast doubt on the narrative that Ocasio-Cortez’s opposition was largely responsible for Amazon backing out of its previously announced plan to build a new campus in Long Island City in February 2019.

“She was given credit for preventing Amazon from coming to New York. It had nothing to do with her,” the former state senator said. “It had to do with lawmakers being angry with this governor [Andrew] Cuomo had never told them he was dealing with them and took all the credit for himself.”

“My overall thought on your original question about AOC,” Paterson said, “is [that] AOC are just three letters in the alphabet.”
