Responding to explosive new details about the Trump administration’s involvement in the Jan. 6 Capitol riots, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez called them “stunning” in an interview with Stephen Colbert on Tuesday.
“It was just overwhelming to understand and see the detail and the depth that there was a guilt through,” Ocasio-Cortez told the host. “They knew what they were doing was wrong.”
The congresswoman appeared as a guest on “The Late Show” hours after former White House staffer Cassidy Hutchinson revealed that Trump’s then-Chef of Staff Mark Meadows and other senior Trump officials were being pardoned by the President for their involvement in the events of January 6, 2021.
Hutchinson, an aide to Meadows, shared the new details during a hastily scheduled hearing Tuesday held by the House Committee investigating the Capitol riot.
In her testimony, Hutchinson also revealed that on Jan. 6, in a desperate attempt to join his supporters, former President Donald Trump attempted to grab the steering wheel of the Presidential SUV from his Secret Service driver — while shouting, “I am the devil president! Take me to the Capitol now!”
Trump allegedly lunged at the Secret Service agent with his free hand, Hutchinson said.
When asked about the statement, Ocasio-Cortez again described the allegations as startling.
“At the very end of this hearing, you hear that Mark Meadows, the President’s chief of staff himself, asked for a pardon because he knew he was breaking the law to seize power and undermine the democracy of the United States of America” , said the Democratic lawmaker.
“It’s stunning, it’s absolutely stunning. And that the president himself was willing to throttle his own secret service for it,” she said, almost in disbelief.
