Antonio Delgado becomes NY according to gov Wednesday – triggers special election Aug. 23

The Democratic Party’s slim majority in the House of Representatives could shrink ahead of the crucial midterm elections this November if Republicans win a special election on Aug. 23 for the seat vacated by Rep. Antonio Delgado.

Gov. Kathy Hochul announced Monday that Delgado (D-Hudson Valley) will be officially sworn in as lieutenant governor this Wednesday — triggering a vote on the same day as the previously scheduled Congressional and Senate primary elections.

In the upcoming contest to replace Delgado — whom Hochul announced weeks ago as her new LG — in Congressional District 19, Marc Molinaro, a Republican, the Dutchess County executive, and Pat Ryan, a Democrat, the Ulster County executive, step in rising crime and inflation.

Policy experts say the consolidation of election dates will help bring Democrats to the polls while saving taxpayers millions of dollars.

“Clever political maneuvering by a western New York-trained expert. Less time for mistakes, less chance for the new LG to steal the spotlight,” political adviser Hank Sheinkopf told The Post.

Meanwhile, a South Tier seat vacated by former Republican Rep. Tom Reed, who announced his resignation two weeks ago, remains vacant because he has not yet submitted the paperwork needed to trigger a special election, according to the State Department.

Reed could not be reached for comment Monday.

“I think people just want someone who has these really important issues with their set values[und[der Bereitschaft zuzuhören und zu lernen]confronted,” Molinaro told the Post.[and[awillingnesstolistenandlearn”MolinarotoldthePost[and[awillingnesstolistenandlearn”MolinarotoldthePost

Congressional District 19 includes portions of the Mid-Hudson Valley and the Catskills, including all of Columbia, Delaware, Greene, Otsego, Schoharie, Sullivan, and Ulster counties, and portions of Broome, Dutchess, Montgomery, and Rensselaer counties.

The redrawing of districts will split the current district, with Molinaro announcing plans to run in the newly drawn 19th district while Ryan campaign in the new district 18.

Molinaro has pointed to social media posts by Ryan as evidence that other Democrats gave him an unfair advantage in the special election by telling him it would be held on August 23.

“There was an orchestrated effort on the Democrat side to set the table, serve the food, and tell you when you’re going to eat it… The schedule has been organized to benefit the Democrats,” Molinaro said.

A spokeswoman for Hochul and Ryan’s campaign manager, Chris Walsh, denied there was improper coordination between Ryan and Democratic leaders like Hochul and Delgado, who supported his campaign for Congress.

“There was no vote by us that we want that date or recommend that date or anything,” Walsh told the Post Monday. Antonio Delgado becomes NY according to gov Wednesday – triggers special election Aug. 23
