The guest explained that he had found the precious item by chance while traveling through Poland.

He said, “I found it in a small secondhand pawn shop in Warsaw. My opening sentence was ‘do you have any Fabergés?'”

The guest revealed that he is not a Fabergé collector and was very lucky to have come across the rare item.

He said the previous owner did not return for the makeup case after taking out a pawn loan for the item.

The stunned expert explained: “If we opened it, we would have Fabergé at the bottom.

“It was made before the 1900s, so the inscription is a little later, It’s 1916.

“But what’s so beautiful about this case is that it has a very unusual Art Nouveau decoration, and Fabergé very rarely uses Art Nouveau decoration in its production.

“We have that’s a big plus but we have a weak point – it has some damage and repairs there.”

The guest joked: “Well, when you’re 100 years old…”

“Yes, I can go astray, you’re right,” Alastair replied cheerfully.

The expert continued: “It has initials here, seems to be AJ with the number 1. The only thing I can tell you about that, is that it has a royal crown at the top, so it is ordered by a Russian member of the royal family as a gift.

“But overall, it’s a great box, it has all these compartments and a snap clip for the card perhaps and this lovely enamel on the back.”

The owner says he said he was just under £2,000 for this case about 30 years ago – saying it was an “eye-catching” amount.

Eager to know how much the case is worth now – Alastair revealed it is valued between £4,000 and £6,000.

The antique expert added: “A great case by the great Russian named Carl Fabergé, you don’t get better than that.

“To find this in a pawn shop in Warsaw, I think is pretty good.”
