A text was sent to the patient that read: “Would you like a referral to the weight management team? Please fill out the form below. You can now walk in height and weight. “

Elizabeth Clark, who received the message yesterday, told Manchester Evening News that she feels the practice has essentially told her to “go get fat grafting” — with many people in her workplace at first keeping quiet about the text.

“They think they were intentionally targeted by the GP,” she told the outlet.

“It has upset a lot of people. What a terrible thing to do without any form of warning.

“It needs to be shared. People need to know they’re not being targeted.”

But while many felt they had become “victims”, it was quickly realized the message had been sent to all patients after Elizabeth shared a screenshot of the text on Facebook – with the surgery’s apology for the “confusion”.

One person commented on Elizabeth’s post: “I feel so attacked.”

Anther wrote: “I called them from the queue at Mac Donald’s (sic). Never been so insulted.”

The third added: “I think it’s a breeze with my mate.”

Dr Yu Yagihashi, from the surgery, apologized to those who “felt offended by the content of the text message”.

“Text messages were sent out to keep our medical records up to date,” he said.

“We’re also advocating for better health by advertising referrals to weight management clinics for people who want to be referred with certain criteria.

The surgery also emphasizes on their Facebook page that the messages are not “personal” – as it warns multiple messages may be sent.

“We sent a text message this morning to All Patients 18+ to update our profile on BMI,” the post read.

“It is not personal to you if you receive them. We are also promoting a referral to a weight management program if you would like a referral. We may send additional messages. text in February.”
