Weary Americans on Monday berated the country’s gun violence crisis after a gunman opened fire at a July 4 parade outside Chicago, killing at least six people and wounding 24.
“I grew up in Highland Park and this parade is a highlight of the year for so many families,” said actress Rachel Brosnahan wrote on Twitter Monday in response to the shooting in the affluent suburb.
“I get sick every time news like this comes out, but I wish you no pitfalls calling your family and friends to make sure everyone is okay. No words.”
It’s unclear how the shooting started or if the shooter was arrested.
New York Times bestselling author Melanie Benjamin wrote a tweet blame the NRA and Republican politicians for the violence.
“Mass shooting at a Fourth of July parade in Highland Park, a very affluent suburb 25 miles north of Chicago. Thank you N-fuc***gRA, Mitch McConnell and all the other politicians in this terrorist organization’s pocket,” wrote Benjamin, who also wrote Mistress of the Ritz.
Congressman Sean Casten (D-IL) tweeted, “Not again.”
“I’m so sick of a U.S. Senate that constantly watches people being shot and keeps coming to the conclusion that what we need to protect more than anything at this moment is the filibuster.” Casten wrote.
“Half-hearted platitudes instead of action kill people.”
