Ana de la Reguera reveals details about her role as “Leopard Skin”.

Ana de la Reguera said her new show Leopard Skin allows her to play a character that feels new.

“I’ve never played anyone like her, someone who has a lot of imagination,” de la Reguera, 45, told The Post. “She lives her life through telenovela, and she’s kind of naive. All those things that this character had were very attractive to me.”

Now streaming on Peacock, Leopard Skin is a thriller set in a secluded beachfront estate in Mexico where former documentary filmmaker Alba Fontana (Carla Gugino, Haunted Hill House) resides.

When a criminal gang that includes Fausto Malone (Gentry White) flees a botched heist, they take refuge on the estate. While Alba hosts a dinner party with TV producer Max (Philip Winchester) and his fugitive girlfriend Maru (Amelia Eve), the gang takes everyone hostage – and things spiral out of control.

Alba’s kleptomaniac former housekeeper Inocencia (de la Reguera) comes by at the wrong time and gets involved as well.

“It’s a thriller, but the way it’s written — I’ve never hit that tone,” said de la Reguera, who is also known for Narcos, Eastbound & Down, Goliath, and the 2021 Zack Snyder Army of the Dead zombie movie.

“I just feel like she’s that person who can be trusted. She’s one of those people who really are there for you no matter what. She is sweet and she is funny and she cares about everyone and wants you to be happy.

“What I love is that she got into the scenes, dropped a bombshell and left. She gives information important to the story and then disappears. I don’t want to say she’s the weird relief, but every time she’s there the tone is a little lighter.”

Although the show is set in Mexico, it was filmed in the Dominican Republic.

“It was one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever shot,” said de la Reguera. “It was in the middle of the pandemic and it was hard because we were only 25 people including crew, cast, makeup, wardrobe, producers … We couldn’t see anyone or leave the resort.”

“We were just there and did everything ourselves. I’m proud of that. We did it under different conditions… that was the only way to get it out this year,” she added.

Mexican De la Reguera lives in Los Angeles. She has worked on English and Spanish language projects throughout her career.

“I like doing both kinds of jobs,” she says. “Sometimes when I’ve been working only in English for a long time I get used to the language and when I switch to Spanish projects it’s kind of weird because I feel weird the first few days.”

“I judge myself more when I’m acting in Spanish because I know how I sound. And I don’t do it in English. So [English] It’s more difficult because it’s not my first language, but I don’t judge myself that much. It’s an interesting process,” she concluded.
