An off-duty NYPD officer working in security at a New York drugstore was attacked by a thief

An off-duty NYPD officer who worked a side job as security at a Midtown Duane Reade was punched in the face Sunday morning while trying to stop a shoplifter from stealing beer, police said.

The officer was on guard duty at the Broadway drugstore between West 35th Street and West 36th Street at around 7:20 a.m. when she was alerted that a man was trying to take beer from the store without paying, police said.

When she confronted the thief, he slapped her in the face and then ran away, police officers said.

The officer was taken to NY Presbyterian Hospital in an ambulance and treated for scratches on her face.

The suspect was described as 5 feet 8 inches tall with a beard and was wearing a brown coat, gray pants and black and white sneakers, police officers said.
