An off-duty HERO cop pinned a knifeman who stabbed a father in front of an elementary school.

Det Con Mark Bates springed into action after a gang intimidated parents.

When one confronted the three Yobs about drinking and smoking weed, he was stabbed in the arm by Kyle Youlden, 21.

Det Con Bates and the victim pursued Youlden near Water Orton School in Warks in July and pinned him to the ground.

Youlden, of Birmingham, admitted the wound and was sentenced to two years and three months in prison at Warwick Crown Court.

Det Con Bates, who has been with West Midlands Police for 14 years, said: “I didn’t hesitate and immediately ran after him.

“I just acted on instinct, like any cop would.”

Det Insp Gareth Unett said: “DC Bates has shown immense courage.

“He does credit to the service.”
