An elderly patient died after falling three floors from a New Jersey hospital, officials said.
The 72-year-old man, who has not yet been identified, was found on the ground outside Clara Maass Medical Center in Belleville around 6:15 a.m. this morning with no reaction, police told NJ.com.
He was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
Upon arrival, “officers observed several bed sheets and blankets tied together forming a makeshift rope coming out of a third floor window,” Belleville Detective Lt. John McAloon opposite the point of sale.
The patient was in the hospital for about six months. Police said he fell from a floor intended for long-term care, but it’s not clear why he was admitted.
He was under no special supervision or orders to prevent him from going through the hospital’s front doors whenever he wished.
