Amy Schumer has revealed she received death threats after making a joke with Kirsten Dunst and Jesse Plemons at the Oscars.
The comedian was one of three hosts at this year’s Academy Awards, sharing presenting duties with Regina Hall and Wanda Sykes.
At one point during the March 27 show, Schumer ventured into the audience and jokingly assumed that Dunst was a “seat filler” — or a non-celebrity who occupied a celebrity’s seat — and asked them to step aside, while she was addressing Dunst’s husband, Plemons. Both Dunst and Plemons were nominated for their Oscars performances during the ceremony The power of the dog.
Although the joke was pre-planned with Dunst and Plemons, some viewers believed that Schumer was genuinely disrespectful to Dunst.
In a new interview with Howard Stern, the comedian confirmed the moment was pre-arranged and shared the negative feedback she’s received since.
“I’ve worked a little bit with Kirsten Dunst and Jesse Plemons. It was completely orchestrated beforehand,” she said on Stern’s SiriusXM show on Wednesday (April 13).
“The joke was I pretended to think she was a seat filler. And we all worked that out together. I received death threats.”
When asked by the hostess if she was serious about the death threats, she said yes and that they were so extreme that the Secret Service contacted her.
“I said, ‘I think you have the wrong number. It’s Amy, not Will [Smith].'”
In relation to King Richard The actor’s altercation with Chris Rock during the ceremony, Schumer was incredulous at the reaction, continuing, “I don’t want Will Smith getting death threats, but the misogyny is incredible.”

Along with Dunst, Leonardo DiCaprio was also the subject of one of Schumer’s jokes the night she poked fun at his relationship with his younger girlfriend, Camila Morrone.
However, she says that to spare her feelings, she informed all of her subjects of her comedic plans in advance.
“To be honest,” Schumer said, “I actually reached out to people I wanted to joke about before to make sure they were okay with it because I’ve been burned too many times.” I didn’t want the camera to cut to someone looking sad.”
