Amazon closes Alexa web tracking system after 25 years

But don’t be fooled – This won’t affect Alexa devices, even though they have the same name.

Amazon used Internet Alexa to track the popularity of websites.

In an announcement post on Wednesday, December 8, the team said: “25 years ago, we founded Alexa Internet. After two decades of helping you find, reach, and convert your audience our digital idol, we have made the difficult decision to retire on May 1, 2022.

“Thank you for giving us a resource to help with content research, competitive analysis, keyword research, etc.

“We’ve been proud to serve you as a customer.”

New subscriptions were also paused on December 8, although customers with existing subscriptions will be able to access the service until May 1, 2022.

No official reason for the outage was shared in the statement.

Although the technology was developed in 1996, it was not until 1999 that Amazon bought it.

Alexa Rating technology tracks how users interact with websites as they navigate around, using software installed on some web browsers.

Information then develops rankings of the most popular websites from around the world.

However, there have been questions about the reliability of the technology due to the way the information is collected and the small sampling of people who use browser extensions to track website information.

But sites like Wikipedia already rely on these popularity rankings.

Alexa Rank is also useful in tracking and sharing information about websites whose owners have chosen not to share rankings and popularity.

It wasn’t until 2014 that the Amazon Alexa voice assistant with the same name debuted.

People with existing subscriptions will be able to export their information before deleting their account.
