Alessio Bevinetto, 20, was charged with two counts of failing to provide aid following a fatal crash Friday night in the 7100 block of South Gessner near Neff.

Authorities said they believe Bevinetto was intoxicated when his pickup truck crashed into a Camry trying to cross the street. In that Camry were drivers Juan Sapon and Martha Sapon, according to court records.

According to authorities, Juan was stopping at a stop sign and thought he had enough time to cross the street. Police said the pickup truck was traveling at high speed, so the truck hit the Camry when it tried to stop.

Authorities said Martha, believed to be an eight- or nine-year-old girl, and Juan were ejected from the vehicle. Both died at the scene.

“It’s completely unfair. It’s not their fault,” said Sean Teare, chief of vehicle crime for the district attorney’s office. “This person doesn’t even have the compassion to stay and make sure they’re okay or call the police.”

Teare said witnesses saw Bevinetto get out of the car disoriented.

“We’re talking about a young girl, eight or nine years old, with only four hours left to spend Christmas, and now she’s dead. Nothing brings it home more than that. We’re talking. about a family, at least, no one would be able to still believe in the magic of Christmas,” Teare said. “This could very well be a parent. We don’t know that yet. This is very tragic.”

Bevinetto was awarded a combined $20,000 bond for both fees.

The relationship between Martha and Juan is yet to be confirmed.
