Aldi opens UK’s cheapest champagne bar with glasses for £2.33

Aldi launched the UK’s cheapest champagne bar in London West End, sells the supermarket’s award-winning glasses of champagne for just £2.33.

The “Veuve Champagne Bar” is open to the public, but will only operate for a limited time, until 11 p.m. on Sunday, December 12.

Located steps away from posh bars like Selfridges and Claridge’s”, Aldi’s chic bar features Veuve Monsigny Champagne, which was named one of the world’s best bubbly in 2018.

The best-selling champagne was awarded the “silver excellence” medal at the 2018 International Wine and Spirits Competition.

The Independent Crowned The anniversary drink is the best budget champagne to celebrate any occasion this year, describing it as “fresh, delicious and bubbly, with more character than double-priced wines”.

Aldi opened Veuve Champagne Bar on Wednesday 8 December and invited the public to sample champagne – but customers were unaware that the location was opened by the supermarket.

Many thought champagne cost an average of £13.50 a glass, but were shocked to discover that Aldi was behind the bubbles.

According to retail store owner Olivia Jones, 26, from Manchester, said: ‘From the outside the bar was very interesting, and I couldn’t believe it when I was told the price.

“I would have thought a glass of champagne like that would cost around £12, especially after trying it. But £2.33 is crazy”.

Other feedback Aldi received about the wine was that it “tastes like Moet & Chandon” and is “cheaper than what you’d expect to pay anywhere in the country, let alone London”.

At just £13.99 per bottle, Veuve Monsigny Champagne is almost six times cheaper than shoppers thought.

Customers can also choose Veuve Monsigny Rose (£2.83 a glass) or non-alcoholic Zerozecco (49p a glass) at the bar, or choose from a menu of champagne cocktails priced from £1.09 to £2. 69, created by leading harmonist Pritesh Mody.
