LVIV, Ukraine (Reuters) – An estimated 200-300 civilians were killed in the Ukrainian town of Irpin near Kyiv before the town was recaptured by Russian forces this week, the local mayor said on Wednesday.
Mayor Oleksandr Markushyn said Monday that Ukrainian forces had regained full control of the city, which had been one of the main flashpoints of fighting with Russian troops near the capital.
He said at a briefing on Wednesday that about 50 Ukrainian soldiers had been killed in Irpin and some bodies were still trapped under rubble. He said there was Russian shelling in the area all night.
