Two British volunteers providing humanitarian aid in Ukraine have been detained there by the Russian military, according to the organization the men work for.
The nonprofit Presidium Network said the two men were arrested Monday by Russian forces at a checkpoint south of Zaporizhia in southern Ukraine.
There was initially no comment from the British Foreign Office.
“The Foreign Office is doing everything it can to assist and identify these two individuals,” UK Trade Secretary Anne-Marie Trevelyan told Sky News.
The Presidium Network said the men, both civilians, were working as part of a Joint Humanitarian Operations Center project in Ukraine to help with the delivery of food and medical supplies and with evacuation.
On Thursday, the British government confirmed that one British national had been killed and another missing in Ukraine. Media reported that the dead man was a former British Army veteran who is believed to have fought with Ukrainian forces.
