According to Fauci, it is now up to Americans to assess their own COVID-19 risk

dr Anthony Fauci appeared to throw in the towel on Sunday for more government restrictions related to COVID-19 – insisting it’s now up to Americans to make their own medical risk assessments.

“This is not being eradicated and it is not being eliminated,” Fauci told ABC’s This Week. “And what’s going to happen is that we’re going to see that each individual has to calculate for themselves how much risk they want to take.”

The White House chief medical adviser said Americans need to consider factors like their age, immunization status and whether they live with at-risk individuals when it comes to coronavirus precautions.

“We’ve gotten to a point where in many ways… we have to live with some level of virus in the community,” he said.

“The best way to mitigate this is to get vaccinated. If not to be boosted if you are eligible to be boosted.”

Fauci’s comments on the state of the pandemic stood in stark contrast to the dire warnings he issued in early 2020.

They are also emerging amid the nationwide spread of the now dominant BA.2 variant, which is highly contagious but less severe than previous strains.

Fauci said that “while there are concerns that we are seeing an increase in cases,” it “is not unexpected that you will see an increase as you pull back mitigation methods.”

“It has been said that if we see an increase, particularly in hospitalizations, we may need to be more careful again and use masks more indoors,” Fauci said. “But right now we’re monitoring it very, very closely and there is concern that it’s increasing, but hopefully we won’t see increasing severity.” According to Fauci, it is now up to Americans to assess their own COVID-19 risk
