Aaron Peña was found dead in a pond after wandering away from his home

An autistic Florida boy who wandered away from home in his pajamas was found dead in a nearby pond early Thanksgiving morning, according to local reports.

Aaron Peña, the youngest of three, had gone missing around noon the previous day, the Orange County Sheriff’s Office said.

The 5-year-old left his Orlando home barefoot and wearing dinosaur-print pajamas, police said.

His mother told News 6 she noticed Aaron was gone when she couldn’t hear him inside the house.

“I didn’t hear any sounds of laughter or that he kept singing – like repetitive songs – he does, or he usually creates a scenario where he talks to himself about the birds and colors and songs he watches on YouTube ‘ said Melissa Stanton.

She checked the whole house before noticing that the back door was open. Stanton said the door is normally locked and believes Aaron figured out how to unlock it.

Police found the boy’s body about 12 hours later.

“It is with a heavy heart that we report that Aaron Pena was found dead in a body of water not far from his home,” the department said.

Aaron’s death comes just 10 days after 3-year-old Axel Caballero found dead in a detention pond near his home in Seminole County, about 15 miles from where Aaron lives.

According to the police, Axel also had autism
