John Lydon has released another tirade against FX’s new Sex Pistols series. pistolafter the official trailer was shared earlier this month.
In a statement on Lydon’s website, a representative wrote that they felt the series would focus on guitarist Steve Jones rather than the band as a whole
“Judging by the trailer, it doesn’t appear to be the case,” the statement said.
“John’s ‘likeness’ is clearly being used to sell this show, a show he wasn’t involved with that was put together behind his back. Put words in John’s mouth and rewrite history. A mid-range fantasy.
“Disney stole the past and created a fairy tale that bears little resemblance to the truth.”
The statement ends: “It would be funny if it wasn’t tragic.”
The Independent has reached out to FX for comment.
From the start, Lydon was a vocal critic of the series, which was overseen by Danny Boyle. In August last year, Lydon lost a court case against his former bandmates for using their music on the show.
Jones and drummer Paul Cook questioned Lydon’s attempt to block use of their music, citing a band agreement reached in 1998 that said decisions on licensing applications could be made on the basis of “majority rules”.
Lydon issued a statement at the time, saying: “I’m the lead singer and songwriter, frontman, image, the bunch, whatever. I put it there. How is that not relevant? It’s amazing to me. It’s so destructive to who the band is and that’s why I’m afraid the whole project could be extremely negative.”
